A royal expert has disclosed that the late Prince Philip had a nickname for the Duchess of Sussex, which carried negative connotations.
The nickname hinted at a comparison to Wallis Simpson, the controversial spouse of King Edward VIII, implying similarities between Meghan Markle and Wallis, both of whom were American and divorced when they married into the royal family.
Prince Philip reportedly used a term that alluded to this association.
Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee who became the Duchess of Windsor, remains one of the most contentious figures in royal history. Her marriage to King Edward VIII led to his abdication from the throne in December 1936, as marrying a divorced person was forbidden for royals at the time. This rule wasn’t amended until 2002, just before Prince Charles wed Camilla, according to the Royal Observer.
After King Edward and Wallis Simpson’s marriage, they faced restrictions and were unable to return to Britain without the consent of his brother, the new King George VI, due to concerns about potential public unrest, as detailed by Vogue.
