Whoopi Goldberg Faces Backlash for Controversial Trump Joke on “The View”

Whoopi Goldberg Sparks Outrage

Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of The View, is no stranger to controversy, but her recent comments about former President Donald Trump have ignited a fresh wave of backlash. During a discussion on the power dynamics within Trump’s administration, Goldberg made a joke that critics say crossed a line.

The remarks quickly drew fire from conservatives on social media, some of whom accused her of contributing to a toxic political atmosphere.

What Was Said

During a segment on The View, Goldberg commented on figures such as Vice President-elect JD Vance and Elon Musk, whom Trump reportedly tapped to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E.). Goldberg questioned the power dynamics in the administration, joking that Musk might think he’s president.

“I’ve called him vice president, I’ve called him president because I don’t know what JD is doing,” she said, adding, “Stay away from the stairways, because, you know, people put their leg out to trip you going down the stairs. Watch out.”

The remark, seemingly lighthearted, referenced the potential for collusion between Vance and Musk. However, it sparked immediate backlash online, with critics interpreting it as an inappropriate comment about Trump.

Clarification After the Break

After the show returned from a commercial break, Goldberg attempted to clarify her comments. She explained that her joke was inspired by her cat, who often tries to trip her on the stairs.

“Okay, I need to clean something up because my cat lays in wait for me on my stairs all the time, and that’s what I was thinking of,” Goldberg said. “I wasn’t trying to indicate that they were actually standing there with their legs out, hoping he would trip.”

Her co-host, Sunny Hostin, defended Goldberg, emphasizing that no one on the panel wished harm on Trump. “Nobody wants anything bad to happen to the president,” Hostin said. Goldberg added, “No, it was light-hearted, and it’s the holidays. Come on! My goodness.”

Conservative Reaction

Despite Goldberg’s clarification, the joke drew significant criticism from conservatives online. Nicholas Fondacaro, a commentator, accused Goldberg of making an outrageous claim, tweeting:

“ABC News moderators Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar claim Elon Musk and JD Vance are planning to kill Trump and usurp control of the government together as Musk/Vance. ‘[Trump] stay away from the stairways.’ – Whoopi.”

CNN pundit Scott Jennings also weighed in, questioning why Goldberg didn’t pose similar questions about the Biden administration. “Who is in charge?” Jennings echoed Goldberg’s query about Trump, pointing to reports suggesting unelected staff wielded power under Biden.

No Stranger to Controversy

This isn’t the first time Goldberg has faced backlash for her remarks on The View. Known for her outspoken views, she often sparks debates that divide audiences along ideological lines. However, her latest comments highlight the increasingly polarized environment in American politics, where even jokes can become flashpoints for controversy.

Final Thoughts

While Goldberg’s clarification may have quelled some criticism, the backlash underscores the fine line public figures must navigate when discussing political figures. The incident serves as a reminder of how words, even in jest, can carry unintended weight in today’s hypercharged political climate.
