As society becomes more fast-paced and industrialized, our habits and lifestyles adapt. One significant shift has been the growing reliance on online shopping, offering convenience at the click of a button. However, despite its many advantages, online shopping comes with risks—such as receiving items that don’t match expectations or facing potential safety concerns during in-person transactions.
To address these issues, the city of Pembroke, Ontario, has introduced a unique solution: parking spaces marked with a handshake symbol. This initiative aims to enhance safety for buyers and sellers conducting online transactions in person. If successful, this innovative idea could become a model for safer online trade practices worldwide.
Handshake Symbol Parking Spots: A Safety Initiative
In Pembroke, parking spaces adorned with a handshake symbol represent “safe trade spots.” These spaces, located near Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachments, are part of Project Safe Trade, a program designed to create secure zones for online property exchanges.

“The purpose of Project Safe Trade is to create a ‘community safety zone’ at an OPP detachment parking lot to facilitate online property transactions,” stated the Pembroke OPP in a news release. These zones aim to eliminate the risks associated with meeting in secluded parking lots, personal residences, or other less secure areas.
Available 24/7 without requiring appointments, the safe trade spots offer a neutral, well-lit meeting place for transactions. While the spaces are not continuously monitored, police officers are available nearby if criminal matters arise. This setup provides peace of mind for users, especially during the bustling holiday season when online purchases surge.
Why Now?
With the holidays in full swing, online transactions increase exponentially as people scramble to find gifts for loved ones. Recognizing the heightened risk during this busy period, the OPP saw the launch of Project Safe Trade as timely.
Steph Neufeld, captain of the safety unit, highlighted the importance of the initiative: “The local launch of Project Safe Trade comes at an ideal time with the busy holiday season upon us. Online property transactions are ever-increasing, and this initiative aims to decrease offences related to online marketplace transactions.”
This collaborative approach not only minimizes risks but also reduces community harm and victimization related to scams or dangerous encounters.
Tips for Safer Transactions
While the handshake symbol parking lots are an excellent step forward, experts like technology analyst Carmi Levy recommend additional precautions:
- Research Sellers: Check the seller’s history, including past reviews and other items they’ve sold.
- Inspect Items: Before handing over money, power on devices and verify they work as expected.
- Bring a Friend: Avoid meeting strangers alone. Having someone with you adds another layer of safety.
- Save All Communication: Retain voicemails, emails, or text messages as a record of your interactions.
- Use Secure Platforms: Conduct conversations within apps like OfferUp or LetGo, which are designed to protect personal information.
A Safer Future
The handshake symbol initiative is a small yet impactful measure to promote safer online transactions, particularly during high-risk seasons like the holidays. Pembroke’s example may encourage other cities to adopt similar projects, transforming the way communities approach online shopping safety.
By combining technology, community awareness, and strategic planning, the handshake symbol initiative has the potential to make a meaningful difference for consumers and sellers alike.
