With summer in full swing, the air buzzing with warmth and blossoms, it’s not just humans enjoying the season. Insects, too, are out in force, and among them, wasps can pose a particular threat. Even someone who’s mildly allergic to their stings, I’m mindful of avoiding encounters with these creatures. It appears our mail carriers share similar concerns.
A Common Issue: Wasp Nests in Mailboxes
A recent post on Reddit by a mail carrier shed light on a common problem: wasps, especially yellowjackets, have a habit of making homes inside mailboxes. Despite the daytime heat, evenings can still be cool, making the insides of mailboxes an inviting refuge for these insects.
The Risks for Mail Carriers
The Reddit post explained how unsuspecting carriers often find themselves face to face with multiple wasps gathered at the back of mailboxes. When they reach in to deliver mail, the wasps can get agitated, resulting in frequent stings. One carrier recounted enduring ten stings in just one summer.
Preventive Measures: Utilizing Dryer Sheets
To tackle this issue, mail carriers have found an unlikely ally: dryer sheets. It seems wasps are repelled by the scent of these household items. As a preemptive measure, some carriers place a dryer sheet at the back of mailboxes to discourage wasps from nesting. If you happen to spot a dryer sheet in your mailbox, it’s best to leave it be. However, it’s essential to note that this method works mainly as a preventive measure; it may not deter existing nests. Keeping the dryer sheet highly scented and promptly replacing it if its scent fades is crucial.
