A Challenging Beginning

Abigail and Isabelle were born conjoined from the chest to the stomach, their tiny bodies intertwined in a way that posed significant medical challenges. At birth, Isabelle’s heart was partially embedded in Abby’s chest, and several of their internal organs were intricately connected. The odds of survival for conjoined twins are slim, but the Carlsen twins were determined to beat the odds.

Their parents, Jesse and Amy Carlsen, were faced with daunting choices. However, they placed their trust in the hands of a skilled team at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The hospital, known for its groundbreaking medical procedures, assembled a team of 17 surgeons who trained meticulously for months in preparation for the complex separation surgery.

On May 12, 2006, after months of preparation, the twins underwent a marathon 12-hour surgery. The operation required unparalleled precision and coordination among the surgical team. Growing Up as Individuals

Now 10 years removed from their historic surgery, Abigail and Isabelle are thriving as fourth graders in Mandan, North Dakota. Their vibrant personalities light up every room they enter, and their bond remains as strong as ever—though they are quick to emphasize their individuality.

“Every night we look in the mirror and say, ‘How do people get us mixed up?’” Abby joked during a recent interview. The twins share an undeniable spunk but enjoy pursuing their unique interests. They are passionate about gymnastics, fashion, and friendly competitions, always striving to outdo each other in the best way possible.

Their parents, Jesse and Amy, have watched their daughters grow into confident and independent young girls. “They don’t want to be confused for one another,” Jesse said. “They’re their own person.”

Abby’s fourth-grade teacher, Tiffany Moos, shared her admiration for the twins, saying, “I can’t imagine how healthy they are. Nothing stops them. They are academically advanced and socially loved by everyone.”

The twins have built a wide circle of friends and continue to embrace life with boundless energy. However, subtle reminders of their early years together remain. “At the mall, we sometimes grab each other’s hands—it’s weird,” they admitted with a laugh. These small habits are a testament to the deep connection they shared during their first months of life.

Medical Follow-Ups and Gratitude

While the twins lead active, healthy lives, their journey requires ongoing medical checkups. Until a few years ago, they wore protective clothing to shield their chests. Isabelle, in particular, needed extra care due to having only a thin layer of skin over her heart. Doctors addressed this by implanting a Gore-Tex patch, a solution that allowed her to live more freely.

The girls return to the Mayo Clinic every few years for routine checkups to ensure their health remains on track. Their parents, ever grateful for the expertise of the Mayo Clinic team, express their appreciation often. “Words can’t express how thankful I am for what they did for our girls,” Amy Carlsen said. Jesse echoed her sentiment, adding, “It’s just priceless.”
