High School Football Team Chooses to Take a Knee During the National Anthem, Stirring Reaction from the Officials!

In the wake of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality and racial injustice, a movement has emerged, adopting his symbolic gesture of kneeling during the national anthem to highlight these pressing issues. However, this act has sparked contention among those who hold deep reverence for the American flag and military, viewing it as a form of disrespect to the nation. When the football team from Monroe High School followed Kaepernick’s lead and knelt during the national anthem, it stirred a notable reaction from the game’s referees.

Referees Ernie Lunardelli, aged 54, and Anthony Lunardelli, aged 27, were disheartened to witness the players’ decision to kneel during the anthem. For Ernie, it became a matter of principle: he couldn’t passively observe what he perceived as a dishonor to the country unfolding before him.

Voicing his discontent, Ernie stated, “I’m staunchly opposed to anyone disrespecting our country, our flag, or our armed forces. The issues they’re protesting have no correlation with the national anthem, and I stand against it. That’s why I decided to protest their kneeling by taking action.”

Ernie’s frustration arises from his belief that the anthem serves as a moment to honor the nation and its symbols, rather than a platform for protest. He staunchly defends his position, asserting that his protest targets anyone who disrespects the flag or anthem, regardless of their demographic.

Having foreseen the players’ intentions, Ernie had previously informed league officials that he would step down if any player knelt during a game he officiated. True to his word, when the students knelt, Ernie and his son exited the field as promised.

Their departure resulted in their replacement by two cadets on the chain crew, a decision Ernie perceives as compromising the game’s official status. He is prepared to challenge the legitimacy of the game, arguing that the substitute personnel lacked proper training and certification.

With legal counsel at the ready, Ernie remains steadfast in his refusal to yield. “I’ve already arranged for legal representation because I won’t be driven out,” he declared with resolve.
