“Dunkin’ Donuts Shifts Strategy: Closing 450 Speedway Locations”

For years, Dunkin’ Donuts has been expanding its presence across the United States, much like Starbucks. It’s become a go-to spot for locals seeking their caffeine fix and bakery treats. In New England, Dunkin’ Donuts seems to occupy nearly every corner, with some areas boasting multiple locations within close proximity.

However, Dunkin’ recently made an announcement that it will be closing 450 locations inside Speedway stores along the east coast. This decision affects those accustomed to grabbing coffee or donuts while fueling up their vehicles, leaving them with the option of settling for gas station coffee and packaged snacks instead of Dunkin’s offerings.

These Dunkin’ locations within gas stations contribute minimally to the company’s revenue, accounting for less than 0.5 percent of Dunkin’ domestic sales in 2019, according to Scott Murphy, president of Dunkin’ Americas. As a result, Kate Japson, chief financial officer, decided to shut down these locations and redirect resources to more profitable ones.

Japson stated, “By closing these sites, we can focus on enhancing our service in other areas with new Dunkin’ NextGen restaurants that offer a wider menu.” The closure of these limited-menu Dunkin’ locations is part of a termination agreement with Speedway.

Despite the closure of these locations, Dunkin’ still maintains a vast network of 9,600 locations nationwide. However, the decision to shut down numerous locations may have its repercussions.

Nevertheless, Dave Hoffman, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands, assured customers of the company’s commitment to providing a seamless experience. He emphasized the convenience of drive-thru locations, On-the-Go ordering, curbside pickup through the Dunkin’ app, and delivery options via GrubHub and other providers.

As the pandemic continues to reshape daily life in America, Dunkin’ aims to remain a comforting presence for its customers. Hoffman expressed gratitude for the dedication of franchisees and employees, highlighting Dunkin’s legacy of serving communities for over 70 years. He reiterated the company’s commitment to being there for customers during times of uncertainty.
