Dunkin’ Donuts Makes Decision to Permanently Close Stores

Dunkin’ Donuts has been steadily expanding across the United States, much like its competitor Starbucks. Known as a go-to destination for coffee and bakery treats, Dunkin’ Donuts has become a staple in many communities. In regions like New England, it’s not uncommon to find Dunkin’ Donuts outlets on nearly every street corner, with some areas boasting multiple locations in close proximity.

However, Dunkin’ recently announced plans to close 450 of its locations situated inside Speedway stores along the east coast. This decision impacts customers who are accustomed to grabbing their coffee or donuts while refueling their vehicles, leaving them with fewer options for their caffeine fix and snacks.

These Dunkin’ outlets within gas stations contribute only a small fraction to the company’s overall revenue, accounting for less than 0.5 percent of Dunkin’s domestic sales in 2019, according to Scott Murphy, president of Dunkin’ Americas. As a result, Kate Japson, the company’s chief financial officer, made the call to close these locations and focus resources on more profitable ventures.

Japson explained, “Closing these sites allows us to concentrate on improving service in other areas with new Dunkin’ NextGen restaurants that offer a broader menu.” The closure of these limited-menu Dunkin’ outlets is part of an agreement reached with Speedway.

Despite the closure of these locations, Dunkin’ maintains a vast network of 9,600 outlets nationwide. However, the decision to shutter numerous locations may have repercussions.

Nonetheless, Dave Hoffman, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands, reassured customers of the company’s commitment to providing a seamless experience. He highlighted the convenience of drive-thru locations, On-the-Go ordering, curbside pickup through the Dunkin’ app, and delivery options via GrubHub and other platforms.

Amidst the ongoing pandemic, Dunkin’ aims to remain a source of comfort for its customers. Hoffman expressed appreciation for the dedication of Dunkin’s franchisees and employees, emphasizing the company’s long-standing legacy of serving communities for over 70 years. He reaffirmed Dunkin’s dedication to being a reliable presence for customers during uncertain times.
