Restaurant Owner Urged to Take Down “Controversial” Sign Displayed in Window
V Pizza, a pizza restaurant chain hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, faced criticism when a franchisee in Georgia displayed a sign that stirred controversy among customers. The corporate office of the franchise has publicly condemned the actions of their Georgia counterpart for posting a sign lamenting the challenges of finding employees during the pandemic, attributing the difficulty to government assistance programs aiding those affected by the economic downturn.
The contentious sign, prominently displayed in the window of the Georgia location, expressed frustration over the perceived reluctance of individuals to work due to government aid, resulting in staffing shortages. It urged patience towards the staff who chose to work and emphasized the importance of tipping.
Upon the sign’s circulation on social media, users expressed disappointment with V Pizza’s stance. Many pointed out the inconsistency of the franchise’s complaint, given that several V Pizza outlets had received substantial Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to retain staff during the pandemic-induced economic crisis.
Paul Scott, the franchise owner, expressed disapproval of the sign’s message and requested its removal. While acknowledging the staffing challenges, he highlighted the financial considerations facing potential employees, especially regarding childcare costs versus unemployment benefits.
Scott emphasized the dedication of the existing workforce and reiterated the franchise’s commitment to supporting them. Meanwhile, Florida’s additional unemployment benefits have been a subject of debate, with Governor Ron DeSantis aiming to encourage a return to work by considering the removal of such benefits.
