Surprising Contrast: Nigerian Woman Gives Birth to Identical Twins with Strikingly Different Looks
When this 31-year-old Nigerian woman gave birth in February of that year, little did she know the extraordinary journey that awaited her. Now, she can effortlessly tell her sons apart, despite them being identical twins. Meet Daniel and David, born just moments apart, yet bearing no resemblance to each other.
Both Daniel and David are albinos, born to Stacy and Babajide, who are both black and reside in Lagos. The charming twins never fail to draw attention wherever they go, owing to their noticeably distinct appearances. David captivates with his stunningly white skin and golden hair, while Daniel takes after his 5-year-old big sister Demilade, boasting dark skin and black curly hair.
Within a year, the twins amassed nearly 18,000 followers on Instagram, as Stacy decided to share their unique journey on the platform.
The twins’ birth on February 26 of the previous year caught everyone by surprise.
“We did not know about their differences while I was pregnant, the scan did not show such, so it was a huge surprise and the most amazing moment when the first twin (Daniel) came out with black hair and the second twin (David) came out with golden hair. I had them through CS, so the doctors were like: ‘It seems you are having totally unidentical twins.’ Before I knew it, nurses started coming out to look at them,” explained Stacy, the mother of three.
The twins’ distinguishing features became evident since one was black and the other white, prompting Babajide to lovingly call David ‘Mr. Golden.’ He was overwhelmed with joy and saw them as God’s wonderful work and his best gift ever.
David falls into the rare category of albinism, with just 1 in 20,000 infants born with this condition.
Albinism is a congenital condition caused by a lack of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color. This condition affects all racial and ethnic groups, leading to varying degrees of pigmentation. With a birth probability of between 3,000 and 20,000, albinism is indeed rare. People with albinism must exercise caution due to potential skin and vision issues.
Fortunately, David has no health problems and displays a stunning golden-haired appearance, a characteristic of oculocutaneous albinism.
While Nigeria has a significant number of albinism cases, with over two million confirmed or suspected instances, there remains a prevailing prejudice against this community due to their skin color. More than 600,000 albino Nigerians encounter discrimination and harassment from peers, family, and communities, leading to job difficulties and academic challenges.
Stacy affirms that her two sons are equally adored, and no one has ever uttered anything unpleasant about them to her.
“Whenever we go out, there are always side talks; people often want to know how and what’s happening, and maybe due to their cute and adorable nature, you just want to come close to say hello.”
The twins’ unique appearance has garnered modeling offers from UK agencies, and the family is open to exploring any opportunities that arise. They have even created an Instagram account to share their joy and raise awareness about significant issues. The twins, Daniel and David, are now over a year old, walking, and highly playful.
“Daniel is more expressive while David is an observer. Both of them are highly inquisitive. Daniel is a foodie while David is quite picky; Daniel is extremely playful while David chooses moments; Daniel always likes to play the bigger brother role; they are both energetic,” Stacy fondly describes their distinct personalities.
