Serious criticism

Considering the filmmakers knew a little about controversy from Private Lessons, they dove right in for Private School. Critics and advocacy groups slammed the film for its portrayal of intimate harassment and its stereotypical views of women. Esteemed critic Roger Ebert criticized the film and called it “anti-woman.” He referenced the opening scene where a group of boys try to break into women’s rooms to take pictures of them in the buff without their consent.

Phoebe Cates – then

Leading the pack of the private school girls is Phoebe Cates as the sweet and playful Christine Ramsey. She is the good girl of the group who prefers to spend her time with her girlfriends and studying rather than dealing with boys. She is the unifier of the group of girls. She is also the object of affection for the hunky Jim Green. They are on and off throughout the story but eventually make amends at the end and are happy together.

Cates continued her streak of being Hollywood’s It Girl following Private School. She starred in the instant classics Gremlins, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The brunette beauty met her husband, Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Kline (pictured right), during an audition for the comedy film The Big Chill. She didn’t get the role but she did hit it off right away with Kline and they married in 1989. She called it quits on acting years ago and now runs her own fashion boutique in New York City.

Matthew Modine – then

Jim is the sweet and excitable high school jock who falls in love with Chris. He’s your typical good-looking bloke with tons of friends, a good relationship with his family, and his future way ahead of him. He treats Chris well even though they get into little fights now and again. He loves her deeply even though he has a hard time communicating his feelings in front of his goofball friends. Fortunately for him she loves him anyway.
