A Life-Altering Diagnosis

In 2018, Scialfa received the diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow. The condition is chronic and can lead to weakened immunity, bone pain, and other serious health challenges.

“This affects my immune system, so I have to be careful what I choose to do and where I choose to go,” Scialfa shared candidly. The diagnosis forced her to make significant adjustments to her lifestyle, including stepping back from extensive touring with her husband and the E Street Band.

Although Scialfa has had to limit her appearances on stage, she still cherishes moments when she can join the band for a few songs. “Every once in a while, I come to a show or two, and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat,” she said. “That’s the new normal for me right now, and I’m OK with that.”

Balancing Family and Creativity

In addition to prioritizing her health, Scialfa has found solace and purpose in spending more time with her family and focusing on her solo music projects. Her granddaughter, Lily Springsteen, born in July 2022, has been a particular source of joy and inspiration.

Speaking to Asbury Park Press, Scialfa explained her decision to limit her participation in Springsteen’s ongoing tour, which began in February 2023. “I didn’t feel as needed in a way because there were a lot of musicians on stage,” she said.

After performing at the first few shows of the tour, Scialfa realized that the band was in great shape without her. “I thought, ‘This is good. This is completely intact. There’s not much room for me to add anything special,’” she said.

Her time away from the tour also allowed her to focus on completing her solo album. “The main thing was I have a record that I couldn’t have finished when Bruce was home because he’s in the studio all the time,” Scialfa noted. “So I took that opportunity to do my record.”

A Partner’s Support and Shared Challenges
