Border Czar Tom Homan Opens Up About Personal Sacrifices and National Security Concerns Amid Escalating Tensions

A Life in the Shadows — The High Price of Public Service

In the realm of national security and immigration enforcement, some names carry a weight far heavier than their titles suggest. Behind the policies, press conferences, and public appearances, there are lives changed by the burden of service. For former acting ICE Director and current border czar Tom Homan, that burden has taken an intensely personal toll — one that has left him living apart from his family due to mounting threats against his life.

During a recent appearance on the “Pod Force One” podcast hosted by Miranda Devine of the New York Post, Homan shared a glimpse into the private costs of his high-profile role. He did not begin the interview with policy statistics or political talking points but instead revealed the heartbreak of distance — from his family, his wife, and the sense of normalcy he once knew.

“I spent a lot of time with my boys growing up,” Homan reflected, “but as I got more and more — climbed the ladder of what I’ve done with ICE director and now back — I don’t see my family very much.”

That separation, he explained, has been driven not just by workload, but by constant death threats.

“My wife’s living separately from me right now, mainly because I worked for many hours, but mostly because of the death threats against me,” Homan stated. “She’s someplace else. I see her as much as I can, but the death threats against me and my family are outrageous.”

Homan, known for his unflinching enforcement stance during the Trump administration’s first term, has now returned to the national stage at a time of high tension and renewed threats to homeland security. His reappointment came in the wake of Trump’s 2024 reelection victory, which the former ICE chief described as a moment of pride and duty.

“I was the first person he called, bringing back, which, again, was a proud moment,” Homan said. “I was actually out to dinner with my wife, and then my phone rang, and I looked down, and it says, ‘POTUS.’ And my wife says, ‘He’s asking him to come back, isn’t he?’”

“So I walked outside, and the first thing he said to me was, ‘You’ve been bitching about it for four years. Well, come back and fix it.’ So how do you say no?”

PART II: Escalation and Enforcement — Homeland Security Under Siege

While Homan’s personal sacrifices underscore the gravity of his position, recent developments show why his role is more crucial — and dangerous — than ever before.

In the aftermath of the United States’ precision strike on Iran’s nuclear weapons infrastructure, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has moved swiftly to counter potential retaliatory threats. This week, ICE officials arrested 11 Iranian nationals in a series of coordinated operations, including one individual with a deeply concerning military background.

Among those detained was Ribvar Karimi, a man identified as a sharpshooter who previously served in Iran’s elite military units. According to ICE, Karimi was apprehended in Locust, Alabama, while holding documentation linking him directly to the Islamic Republic of Iran Army.

Officials stated that Karimi entered the United States on a K-1 visa — a classification typically reserved for foreign nationals seeking to marry U.S. citizens. However, investigators say Karimi failed to adjust his legal status, violating the terms of his visa and making him subject to deportation.

Karimi’s presence in the U.S. became especially alarming in light of Iran’s escalating rhetoric following the American bombing campaign. Though President Trump has declared a cease-fire between the two nations, the specter of retaliatory strikes or sleeper cell activity continues to loom large.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the gravity of the threat:

“Under Secretary Noem, DHS has been full throttle on identifying and arresting known or suspected terrorists and violent extremists that illegally entered this country, came in through Biden’s fraudulent parole programs or otherwise. We have been saying we are getting the worst of the worst out — and we are. We don’t wait until a military operation to execute; we proactively deliver on President Trump’s mandate to secure the homeland.”

McLaughlin’s statement reflects a significant shift in national security policy under the renewed Trump administration, focusing on preemptive actions to neutralize threats rather than waiting for hostile acts to occur.

The timing of these arrests is especially noteworthy. Just days after Iran issued threats of retaliation for the bombing of its nuclear facilities, the capture of Karimi and others raises questions about how many such actors might be present — undetected — within U.S. borders.

Despite these threats, Homan remains resolute in his mission. Though separated from his wife and living with the weight of constant danger, he remains steadfast in his commitment to protecting American citizens.

“You don’t get into this job because it’s easy,” Homan said during his interview. “You do it because you believe in something bigger than yourself.”

As the political landscape grows more fraught and the lines between domestic policy and global conflict continue to blur, the personal and professional lives of figures like Tom Homan offer a sobering reminder: the fight to secure the border isn’t just a headline — it’s a human story.
